Skills Active Aotearoa Group has announced a planned leadership transition, with chief executive Maren Frerichs concluding her time with the organisation at the end of the year and Todd Maddock appointed chief operating officer to oversee operations and continue delivering on the organisation’s strategic goals.

Since joining the Group in 2020, Maren has led Skills Active Aotearoa and its subsidiary Te Mahi Ako through a period of significant sector reform and achievement, including the establishment of Te Mahi Ako as a Private Training Establishment dedicated to ngā mahi ā-rēhia | the world of active recreation, leisure, and entertainment.

Sam Napia, Board Chair for Skills Active Aotearoa Ltd, said Maren’s leadership had been instrumental in shaping the Group’s current strength and direction:

Speaking on behalf of the Group, director Butch Bradley said, “Maren has guided the Group through one of the most complex transitions in vocational education history. Her vision and determination have ensured that Skills Active and Te Mahi Ako remain strong, future-focused organisations that continue to serve our ākonga and industry with integrity.”

“This transition has been carefully managed to ensure continuity and stability. We thank Maren for her commitment and for the strong foundation she has built, positioning the Group for continued success” said Butch.

Todd Maddock joined Skills Active in 2018 and has held a range of leadership roles across the organisation, most recently as head of operations and finance. His experience and long-standing commitment to Skills Active’s mission provide a strong platform to lead the next phase of operational excellence and collaboration with industry partners.

Incoming chief operating officer Todd Maddock said, “It’s an honour to take on this role and continue building upon the strong  foundation that Maren and the team have created. Together, we’ll keep driving improved outcomes for ākonga, workplaces, and industries.”

The Board will begin the process of appointing a new group chief executive in 2026.

Ngā mihi nui ki a Maren mō ōna mahi whakahirahira
