New Zealand Apprenticeship: Exercise Professional (Level 4)

This apprenticeship is for motivated people looking to build successful careers in the exercise sector.

Completing the Exercise Professional apprenticeship will take you from an exercise sector rookie to an empowered fitness professional, equipped to lead groups and individuals, and own and run a personal training business.

To enrol in this programme, you need to be working in a paid job with an exercise facility or organisation, or self-employed.

This apprenticeship is designed to be completed in about 2 years. 

You'll be trained, observed and assessed in the workplace. Some of your assessments will be completed online

The apprenticeship is comprised of four programmes:

Exercise Foundations programme

  • Organisational values and goals 
  • Health and safety procedures and responsibilities
  • Customer service
  • Benefits of recreation for the community.

New Zealand Certificate in Pre-designed Exercise Instruction (Level 3)

  • Selecting an appropriate pre-designed programme to match individual participant requirements
  • Instructing and monitoring a pre-designed exercise programme
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Health and safety, and industry code of ethics
  • Maintaining personal health and wellness.

 New Zealand Certificate in Exercise (Level 4)

  • Exercise fundamentals
  • Nutrition and wellbeing
  • Working professionally
  • Exercise delivery
  • Business skills.

 Exercise Group Training module

  • Planning, delivering and reviewing a group training session

By completing this apprenticeship you will be eligible to register with the New Zealand Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), at the levels of Exercise Assistant, Exercise Consultant 1, and Personal Trainer.
