Te Mahi Ako is proud to launch the Exercise Fundamentals Micro-credential (Level 4), a practical, workplace-based programme designed to help develop the next generation of exercise professionals.

Developed in partnership with the exercise industry, this new micro-credential responds to the growing need for confident, capable professionals who can deliver safe, effective and engaging exercise experiences.

As the industry continues to evolve, employers are looking for people with more than technical knowledge. They need professionals who can communicate effectively, build positive relationships with clients, and create welcoming, supportive environments that help people achieve their health and fitness goals.

The exercise fundamentals micro-credential has been designed to develop these core skills through practical learning in real workplace settings.

Built with industry, for industry

Te Mahi Ako has worked closely with employers and industry partners to ensure the programme reflects the knowledge and skills that today's exercise professionals need.

Learners will develop practical capabilities in areas such as:

  • Delivering safe and effective exercise sessions.
  • Applying fundamental exercise principles.
  • Communicating confidently with participants.
  • Creating positive and engaging exercise experiences.
  • Demonstrating professional practice in a workplace environment.

By combining structured learning with workplace experience, learners can immediately apply their new skills in real-world settings.

A practical pathway into the industry

The exercise fundamentals micro-credential is ideal for people who are starting a career in the exercise industry, as well as those already working in fitness who want to strengthen their knowledge and confidence.

The programme is workplace-based, allowing learners to develop their skills while gaining valuable industry experience.

Whether you're supporting members on the gym floor, assisting with exercise programmes or building your coaching confidence, this micro-credential provides a strong foundation for future professional development.

Supporting the future workforce

Nick Makea, national partnership lead – exercise at Te Mahi Ako, says the new micro-credential has been developed to meet the changing needs of the industry.

"The exercise industry is continuing to grow and evolve, and employers are looking for people who are confident, capable and ready to support participants from day one.

This micro-credential has been developed with industry to help learners build practical skills that can be applied immediately in the workplace. It's about creating confident professionals who are ready to make a positive impact."
